Over the past 24 hours, total crypto market capitalization has jumped more than 10%, Bitcoin (BTC) has reclaimed $70,000, and Ethereum (ETH) has gained nearly 20%.

The current crypto market rally is being driven by the U.S. Treasury’s decision to increase buybacks of longer-dated bonds. Nearly $3 billion in short liquidations then accelerated the move.

But the answer to why is crypto going up today goes beyond Treasury buybacks and short liquidations. The market received fresh signals from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the White House, and individual tokens such as HYPE had catalysts of their own.

Crypto Rally: Key Reasons Why Crypto Is Going Up Today

  • The U.S. Treasury raised buyback limits for longer-dated government bonds from $2 billion to at least $4 billion;
  • A short squeeze accelerated the rally, with nearly $3 billion in crypto positions liquidated over the past 24 hours. Shorts accounted for about 92% of the total;
  • The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) released a new proposal on crypto asset regulation, and Trump again called on Congress to pass the CLARITY Act;
  • Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded about $517 million in net inflows on August 19.

Why Is Bitcoin Going Up

On August 20, Bitcoin (BTC) reached $72,000, up more than 15% since the start of the week. Earlier in the morning, BTC was trading around $69,100 after climbing to nearly $69,900 overnight. The current Bitcoin rally is being linked primarily to the U.S. Treasury’s decision to increase buybacks of longer-dated government bonds.

On August 19, the U.S. Treasury announced that it would at least double the limit for liquidity support buybacks of 10- to 30-year bonds, from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation. The new limit will take effect on September 9. The Treasury said the change is intended to provide greater liquidity support for longer-dated securities.

Short liquidations helped push the Bitcoin price up even faster. During the U.S. trading session, Bitcoin (BTC) gained around 6%, with roughly $1.4 billion in short positions liquidated within four hours.

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded another $517.2 million in net inflows on August 19, their largest daily inflow since May 4.

Why Ethereum Is Going Up

On August 20, Ethereum (ETH) is trading around $2,290, up roughly 19% over the past 24 hours. The Ethereum price up move now stands at about 20% for the week, compared with Bitcoin’s roughly 12% gain over the past day. ETH has emerged as one of the strongest performers among major cryptocurrencies in the current rally.

The answer to why is Ethereum going up today is most closely linked to the broader crypto market rally that followed the U.S. Treasury’s decision to increase buybacks of longer-dated government bonds. There has been no separate Ethereum-specific catalyst.

Another factor in why is Ethereum price up today is short liquidations. According to CoinGlass, around $1.13 billion in ETH positions were liquidated over the past 24 hours. Total crypto market liquidations approached $3 billion, with shorts accounting for roughly 92%.

The $2,200 level is now worth watching. If ETH holds or continues trading above this level, the rally can be considered intact. If buyers fail to provide enough support, the price could fall to $2,000.

Why Is Solana Going Up

On August 20, Solana (SOL) is trading around $84, up roughly 10.5% over the past 24 hours. Earlier on August 19, the token was trading near $77 and outperforming other major cryptocurrencies. Solana is currently one of the strongest performers among crypto majors.

If answering why is Solana going up today in short, the main driver behind the current move is the broader crypto market rally. There is no single Solana-specific event that fully explains why Solana is going up.

Recent Solana updates have still provided some support for SOL. In the week ending August 14, U.S. Solana exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded around $10.3 million in net inflows, up from less than $150,000 a week earlier. Another $1.6 million flowed into the products on August 18.

In August, validators backed moving proposals SGP-0002 and SGP-0003 to the next stage of discussion. The proposals would reduce future SOL issuance and increase the amount of tokens burned each day. We would not, however, describe these developments as a guaranteed explanation for why is Solana price up today.

Altcoins Rally: Best Performing Altcoins Today

The rally extended beyond Bitcoin. HYPE, XRP, DOGE, and other tokens ranked among the best performing altcoins today, with the broader altcoins rally lifting several major assets at once.

The reasons behind the gains were different. HYPE received a separate boost after Donald Trump commented on Hyperliquid, whereas XRP, DOGE, and other altcoins largely moved with the broader market. Below are some of the day’s biggest movers.

Why Is Hyperliquid (HYPE) Up Today

The short answer to why is Hyperliquid up today is that HYPE had its own catalyst on top of the broader market rally. On August 19, Donald Trump said at the White House that Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chair Michael Selig is working to bring Hyperliquid to the U.S. in a “fully compliant and legal format.”

Following the statement, HYPE rose from around $62 to $72 and traded above $73 on August 20. At one point, its 24-hour gain exceeded 25%.

The news stands out against Hyperliquid’s previous status in the U.S. The platform restricts access for U.S. users, and in early August, JPMorgan cited the lack of licensing and limited Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) procedures among the risks facing the perpetual decentralized exchange (perp DEX).

Changpeng Zhao (CZ) raised a similar concern in June. He called Hyperliquid’s model “awesome” but pointed to the lack of KYC and advised the team to have good lawyers.

After Trump’s statement, CZ returned to the issue from a different angle. In a post on X, he wrote that many people were “missing the bigger picture”: regulation cannot apply to just one company, so rules that benefit Hyperliquid would, in his view, benefit the rest of the industry too.

He previously suggested that a legal launch of Hyperliquid in the U.S. could pave the way for other perp DEXs and decentralized services.

Separately from Trump’s comments, the Hyperliquid Policy Center and TradeXYZ submitted a proposal to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on August 18 outlining a regulatory framework for pre-IPO perpetuals. The groups want rules that could eventually make such markets available to U.S. investors.

The SEC has not approved anything yet. So the answer to why is Hyperliquid HYPE up today currently comes down to two separate developments: the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) work on bringing Hyperliquid to the U.S. and the ecosystem’s parallel push for rules covering its real-world asset (RWA) products.

Why XRP Is Going Up

On August 20, XRP is trading around $1.10, up more than 10% over the past 24 hours. The token is outperforming Bitcoin on a daily basis. The main factor behind why XRP is going up today is the broader crypto market rally.

XRP has its own news backdrop. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse attended Donald Trump’s meeting with crypto industry representatives at the White House on August 19, where they discussed regulation and the future of the CLARITY Act. A day earlier, Ripple announced a partnership with South Korea’s Jeonbuk Bank to use Ripple Payments.

Still, there is no single event that fully explains why is XRP going up.

Why Is Dogecoin Going Up Today

On August 20, the Dogecoin price is holding around $0.077, up roughly 9-10% over the past 24 hours. The answer to why is Dogecoin going up today does not involve any major DOGE-specific catalyst: the token has risen alongside the broader crypto market.

For traders following memecoins and trying to understand why is Dogecoin rising, newer ecosystems are worth watching too. One example is Robinhood Chain, where memecoins became the most popular segment of activity after the mainnet launched in July.

CASHCAT, for example, gained around 120% in a week in early August. The token was created by the community and is not affiliated with Robinhood.

What to Expect From Crypto: Will Crypto Go Up Again

The answer to will crypto go up again is difficult to pin down right now, with macro conditions remaining key to a more precise outlook. After the latest rally, Bitcoin (BTC) reclaimed $68,000, but bond yields are rising again and the Federal Reserve remains hawkish on interest rates.

For those tracking whether Bitcoin will keep going up, a weekly close above $68,000 is an important level. In that scenario, the next area to watch could be around $78,000.

The longer-term answer to when will crypto go up depends on regulation too. Passage of the CLARITY Act could support the market, though some of the regulatory optimism appears to be already priced into Bitcoin.
