Stacks (formerly Blockstack) is a decentralized internet and developer platform designed to bring secure, serverless applications and smart contracts directly to the Bitcoin ecosystem. The project's architecture focuses on enabling users to control their own identities and data without relying on centralized corporate servers.

In early January 2017, the startup announced a $4 million Series A equity funding round led by Union Square Ventures, with secondary lead Lux Capital and notable angels such as Naval Ravikant. According to the official SEC Form D filing covering the broader offering, 16 investors participated, pushing the company's total aggregate funding at the time to $5.3 million. The fresh capital was strategically allocated to finalize the unified development platform, launch a new decentralized web browser, and expand the core engineering team from 4 to 10 employees.
