Solana is a high-performance, permissionless blockchain designed to provide scalable and fast decentralized applications (dApps). Its native token, SOL, is utilized for transaction fees, network staking, and participating in decentralized governance.
On June 9, 2021, Solana Labs announced the completion of an offshore private token sale, raising exactly $314.15 million - a deliberate mathematical nod to Pi. The funding round was co-led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Polychain Capital, with participation from Alameda Research, Multicoin Capital, and individual investor Boys Noize. The capital will be used to launch the Solana Labs Incubation Studio to accelerate ecosystem development, establish a venture investing arm, and create a dedicated trading desk to provide network liquidity.
